If you've lived in Nixa for more than a season, you already know the calendar tricks: the pool empties out by 4, the disc golf course thins out after the youth soccer games clear, and the good patio seats at 14 Mill Market go before the sun drops behind the garage doors. What's different about this summer is that the pieces finally sit close enough together to string into one evening without a second drive.
This post is a working map of what's left on the summer calendar, where the new business openings sit inside it, and how a resident who already owns the neighborhood puts a Friday or Saturday together without repeating last month.
The thesis, in one line
Nixa's late-summer weekend now runs on a three-point rotation — McCauley Park at 701 N. Taylor Way for daylight and dusk programming, 14 Mill Market for the weeknight food-and-patio hours, and the new PaPPo's on N. McCroskey filling the gap between them. Everything else on the calendar plugs into that shape.
What's still on the McCauley calendar
McCauley is the anchor because it holds the most public programming and the widest range of energy levels in one 40-acre footprint. Amenities include the X Center, the Aquatics Center, playground, pavilion, soccer fields, an 18-hole disc golf course, a walking trail, and seasonal restrooms. That combination is why the city routes most of its free family programming here.
The programming still to come this summer and into early fall:
- Movies in the Park, McCauley Park. All movies begin at dusk. Remaining lineup: July 25 — Minecraft Movie (PG); August 29 — Superman 2025 (PG-13); September 26 — Harold and the Purple Crayon (PG). Concessions available for purchase.
- Sensory Swim, Nixa Aquatics Center. July 17 and August 14, 10–11:30 a.m. Admission is free. Music off, whistles quieter, focused on the zero-depth entry side of the pool.
- Disc golf, anytime. 18 holes, moderate difficulty, about an hour for a full round covering roughly 1.9 miles. Weekends get busy with youth sports overflow, so weekday evenings are the calmer window.
The practical read on this: a family that shows up at McCauley for a 6 p.m. picnic on a Movies-in-the-Park night can knock out a round of disc golf, let the kids run the inclusive playground, and be settled on a blanket before the screen lights up. It's the rare Nixa outing where you don't have to choose one activity per stop.
Why 14 Mill Market changed the weeknight math
Before 2023, a Tuesday night in Nixa meant driving into south Springfield if you wanted more than one cuisine at the same table. 14 Mill Market, the first food hall in Southwest Missouri, opened in 2023 after Rich and Leah Callahan road-tripped from food hall to food hall to build the concept. The site itself carries some Nixa history: the building sits where the Wisner Mill opened in 1955 as D&D Feed and Farm Supply, torn down in 2022 because of its deteriorating condition. The Callahans salvaged feed mixers, scales, and sections of oak; the oak became the tables inside the hall.

The one-year lease detail matters more than it looks. It's the reason the hall isn't the same place it was last summer. If your last visit was during the opening rush, the lineup you remember is not the lineup you'll walk into this weekend. Chef Leo Kim's operation, The Gochu, is a good example of a vendor that's grown into a destination in its own right — Kim moved from Korea to Argentina to Los Angeles, spent time as a sushi instructor at a prestigious institution, and helped open restaurants in markets as varied as Kauai, El Paso, Charleston, and Fort Wayne before setting up in Nixa. That's not a résumé you assume when you're pulling into a food hall on Highway 14.
The new pizza room on McCroskey
The addition that reshapes the map this summer sits about a mile away. PaPPo's Pizzeria & Pub took over the property at 701 N. McCroskey St. that was most recently a Bair's Sports Grill. The original plan was a December 2025 or January 2026 opening; after an unexpected delay, the Nixa store opened in May 2026.
A few things about the operation that are worth knowing before you go:
- General Manager Josh Carlew opened with a staff of 40 to 50, some of whom came over from the south Springfield PaPPo's. The room is not a cold-start.
- The Nixa store is the company's 10th Missouri restaurant and 12th location overall.
- Owner Chris Galloway's stated position on quality is that when he was with a national pizza company, they started cutting corners and selling cheese that wasn't real dairy cheese, which is the origin story he tells for how PaPPo's is priced and sourced today.
- Galloway has said he wants to add a location in Republic and two more in Springfield.
For a resident planning a Friday, the interesting geography is that PaPPo's on N. McCroskey and McCauley Park on N. Taylor Way are close enough that a pizza-then-movie combo works without any real drive. The Wild Robot crowd already worked that out in late June.
The Saturday connectors
The rest of the summer calendar is smaller but useful for filling out a Saturday that isn't a movie night:
- The Cruise-In at Braum's Ice Cream & Dairy in Nixa runs Saturday mornings from 11 a.m., a low-commitment stop before lunch.
- Sug's Craftival with Crafts and Drafts is on August 29 in Nixa, which lands on the same day as the Superman movie night at McCauley. It's the busiest single day left on the summer calendar.
- Rosebud's Cottage at 205 N. Main Street runs seasonal markets with free admission and parking, a Main Street stop worth chaining with a walk to the Chamber district.
One resident-level tip the visitor guides never quite get right: on Movies-in-the-Park nights, McCauley's parking fills at the Aquatics Center side first. Come in from Taylor Way rather than North Street and you'll walk in with your chair, not around it.
How a Nixa household actually strings it together
Reading the calendar as a resident rather than a visitor changes the shape of the weekend. A workable rhythm for the next six weeks:
Friday. PaPPo's on McCroskey for an early dinner. If it's a movie night, walk or drive the mile to McCauley for dusk. If not, swing to 14 Mill Market for the Wisner Bar patio and a second-round dessert from Liege Love or Sno Biz.
Saturday morning. Braum's Cruise-In if the weather holds, then a Rosebud's market stop if there's one on the calendar, then McCauley's paved walking trail or a disc golf round before the afternoon heat.
Saturday evening. 14 Mill Market. Rotating vendors mean the "usual" isn't the same twice, and the outdoor space handles kids, dogs on leash, and an adult beer better than any single-concept restaurant in town.
Sunday. Sensory Swim if the date lines up, otherwise the Gardens at Woodfield for a slower loop before the week resets.
The point isn't that any single stop is new. It's that the three anchors sit close enough now, with enough programming behind them, that the summer no longer requires a drive into Springfield to feel full.
